Million Barrel Museum
A series of successful oil wells in the 1920s led to an overabundance of oil and no place to put it. There were no pipelines to refineries then. Construction workers with mule-drawn equipment created a vast reservoir to hold five million barrels of oil. Unfortunately, after injecting only one million barrels of oil, the reservoir leaked and oil evaporated. After a long series of re-purposing the site – including a water park which leaked also – the Million Barrel Museum greets visitors with century-old artifacts and oil-drilling equipment, railroad cars, the Coca-Cola Museum, an historic home, and a 400 seat amphitheater built into a portion of the tank. Fascinating – go there!
Monahans Sandhills State Park
Hike barefoot, ‘surf’ the dunes on a disk, or ride your horse through the sand. No marked trails because the wind changes everything overnight. Explore an ocean of sand with its wild life and desert plants. Monahans Sandhills State Park is a unique and unforgettable destination.
Roy Orbison Museum
The Roy Orbison Museum in nearby Wink, Texas is dedicated to the upbringing of an absolute icon of American music. If you find yourself in the neighborhood, stop in. Hours are unpredictable, so call ahead. It’s a fun, quirky oddity in the vastness of West Texas.
Rattlesnake Bomber Base
Just 20 miles from Monahans, the Pyote Airforce Base was nicknamed Rattlesnake Bomber Base because of the many rattlesnakes found there during construction. While there is no museum at this location, it is a very interesting place to visit. Historical markers focus on the squadrons who trained to fly bombers during WWII and the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb. Geocache fans, take note…there is a Geocache at this location!
Ward County Golf Course
A beautiful and challenging 18-hole course, the Ward County Golf Course is open to the public six days a week. WCGC has a driving range, putting green, men’s and women’s tournaments throughout the year, and a fully stocked pro shop.
Multi-Purpose Complex Fitness
It’s a great place to work out on treadmills, elliptical machines, a stair master, and dumbbells up to 80lbs. You get access to their indoor swimming pool and basketball courts. There is a low monthly fee – no contracts. Swim indoors year-round at Multi-Purpose Complex Fitness.
Perch Pond
Fish from the banks of Perch Pond with your rod and reel. The pond is stocked with trout, catfish, bass, crappie, perch and carp. Where? 2200 S Ora in Monahans.
